When to Choose a Wall Charger

Designed for Kiwi Drivers

At EV Power, we understand that every EV owner charges differently. Our chargers are designed in New Zealand, tested for local conditions, and supported by a trusted team here in Christchurch. While we offer both portable and wall-mounted options, it’s worth noting that 61% of EV drivers rely on portable chargers as their main charging method. That’s why our Classic Plus 5.0, designed right here in Christchurch, has become the gold standard for safety, reliability, and value.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT WALL CHARGERS

Wall chargers — also known as home charging stations, wall boxes, or home charge points — are permanently wired units mounted to the wall. They deliver higher currents through a dedicated circuit, making them especially useful for EVs with bigger batteries or for households with more than one plug-in vehicle.

They’re designed to be used daily, so if you arrive home every evening with a near-empty battery, a wall charger may be the most convenient option.

PORTABLE CHARGING CABLE OR A WALL CHARGER?

Portable charging cables (Mode 2) plug into a standard outlet such as a 3-pin or caravan socket. While some overseas imports can be risky, our portable units are in a class of their own. With in-plug temperature sensors, WorkSafe-compliant design, and Consumer NZ recognition, they’re engineered for Kiwi homes and cars.

Wall chargers (Mode 3) step up when you need daily fast charging or multiple EVs at home. A 32A wall charger can dramatically reduce charging times, and with 3-phase supply it’s even faster, depending on the onboard charger of your vehicle.

First, do you charge your EV every day? If so, consider installing a wall charger at home. High-demand vehicles can increase the wear and tear on your wiring, but a wall charger is built for daily use. A wall charger with a 32 Amp rating will also provide faster charging. For more details on charging times, check out our Charging Guide.

So it depends on how far you drive each day and how much time you have to charge your car. Long-range EVs with larger batteries, like Teslas, can utilize 3-phase charging.

NOT ALL CHARGING CABLES ARE CREATED EQUAL

OEM Audio only sells our own brand EV Power EVSE which has safety features to help protect your car and property from, for example, fluctuations in the supply. All instructions must be followed for safe use. All EVSE should be purchased from a supplier who has met all the accreditation requirements as set out by WorkSafe.

We recommend that you engage a registered and licensed electrician to check your household wiring.

BENEFITS OF WALL CHARGERS

Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB)

DLB technology is becoming an essential feature. If you charge your EV at home while using other appliances like the oven, spa, or PC, power management will give you peace of mind—another great reason to invest in a wall charger.

Smart Features that Matter

Our smart wall chargers come with dynamic load balancing, which automatically manages your home’s power draw so you can charge your car without overloading your household circuits. For added peace of mind, our ECOLINK smart wall charger is officially listed on the EECA approved smart charging register.

💡 Did you know?
Dynamic load balancing allows you to run your EV charger alongside ovens, hot water systems, or heat pumps — without blowing a fuse.

Charging Time

EV Power Wall Chargers will enable higher powers than the EV Power charger cables, supplying 230V, (like what an electric dryer or oven uses). Consequently, the charging time is faster. On average, an EV Power  Wall Charger can reduce charging time in half or even less. . Understanding the time you need to charge your vehicle will help you select the right EVSE charging product.

Future Proof Your Premises

Planning to add a second EV in your household, or want to let friends plug in when they visit? Our untethered smart wall chargers let you set the charging rate and use the cable of your choice. With scalability and load balancing built in, your home is ready for the EV future

Smarter control with User Authentication

Sometimes you need more than just a charging point — you need control. Our chargers can be equipped with RFID user authentication, meaning only approved users with a matching access card can initiate charging. Perfect for workplaces, apartment complexes, or shared driveways.

Professional Installation is Essential

Once you’ve chosen the charger that best fits your needs, a licensed electrician should handle the installation. They’ll ensure the correct amperage and wiring for continuous high-load use. Safe installation protects both your household and your EV.
