"WHAT TYPE OF CHARGING CABLE DO I NEED?"

AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

EV charging cables have connectors on both ends—one plugs into the power source, the other into your vehicle. It’s crucial to select a cable with connectors/plugs that match your EV’s charging port.

In New Zealand, EVs typically have either a Type 1 (J1772) or Type 2 (Mennekes) AC charging port. it depends on where the vehicle was assembled.  Choose your EV Charging cable carefully or it will not fit your car.

  • Type 1: Commonly found in Japanese imports like the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander. They are round. Some Type 1 Evs also have a fast-charging DC CHAdeMO plug.

  • Type 2: Standard for European models, Teslas imported from the UK or Australia, and most New Zealand-new EVs. NB: Some popular Japanese EV’s such as Nissan Leafs can also be Type 2. A Type 2 charging port is circular with a flat side. It is a popular connector type in New Zealand. It can be combined with other plugs (Combined Charging System) but a Type 2 handle will always fit. Type 2 ports are ‘D-shaped’.

To determine your vehicle’s connector type, consult your owner’s manual or inspect the charging port. If you need assistance identifying the correct cable, feel free to ask.

CHAdeMO plugs can be on some EV’s from Asia. It is used for DC fast charging in Japan. See our information page on Using the Public Charging Network for more information.
