Below are our recommendations for what would suit your NZ New or ex-European BMW EV / PHEV. You don’t need to buy BMW branded charging products. Any product on this page will work perfectly well.
Portable EV Charger (Medium Speed Charging – Mode 2)
This charger plugs into the standard 3-pin power socket that you’ll have at home. No installation required.

Wall Charger (Medium/Fast Speed Charging – Mode 3)
For faster charging at home you can get a Wall Charger installed. They get wired directly to your home’s power circuit like an oven.Â
This 32 amp wall charger will give you approximately 40km of range per hour of charging, enough to charge a long-range EV overnight, or supply a quick top-up before heading out.

Charging Lead (Medium/Fast Speed Charging – Mode 3)
Wall Chargers are often sold ‘untethered’, which means you’ll also need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable to connect to your BMW.Â
Depending on the length you want, we recommend this Type 2 to Type 2 Lead. You can get up to 10m leads if you need extra length.
As well as connecting your home wall charger, there are many public Wall Chargers that will require you to bring your own charger lead, so it pays to keep one in the vehicle on bigger trips.
CCS Type 2 Socket
DC Fast Charging (Ultra-Fast Charging – Mode 4)
New Zealand and European BMW Electric Vehicles use CCS (Combined Charging System) connectors for DC fast charging.Â
Public fast charging stations supply a much higher powered DC current. Fast chargers can give you an 80% charge in as little as 20 minutes.Â
They will generally have a lead attached to the charger, so you don’t need anything to charge at a DC Charging Station.

BMW X1 xDrive25e A compact PHEV SUV with all-wheel drive and up to 90km electric-only range (WLTP). Home Charging Port: Type 2
BMW X3 xDrive30e A medium PHEV SUV with up to 90km electric-only range (WLTP) and a 22.1kWh battery. Charges fully in around 2.5 hours on a home wall charger. Home Charging Port: Type 2
BMW X5 xDrive50e BMW's large flagship PHEV SUV with up to 110km electric-only range (WLTP) — the longest EV range of any BMW PHEV currently available in NZ. Home Charging Port: Type 2
BMW EV Charging at Home
For most BMW EV and PHEV owners, the best home BMW EV charging setup is a dedicated 7kW wall charger paired with a Type 2 cable. This will fully charge most BMW PHEVs in 2–3 hours, and charge larger BEV batteries such as the iX or i7 comfortably overnight. If you have rooftop solar, a solar-integrated smart charger lets you charge your BMW predominantly on free energy from your own roof.
